Most people agree that the hardest part of any yoga class is just getting on the mat. If you struggle with motivating yourself and staying on track then check out my Yoga Habits Mentoring course here:

As a yoga teacher I have noticed that there are a few things that can really de-rail a new yoga students’ practice before they really get started.

Those things are neck and wrist pain.

This week’s email will give you some helpful hints and even a short video to help with your wrists. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for some tools and ideas if you experience neck
pain.

In our normal day to day life we just don’t spend all that much time on our hands, so if a new student jumps into yoga practice without a good watchful teacher and a proper warm up, they might experience some
wrist pain.

The first important rule to remember with yoga is that it is not recommended for you to push through any pain.

I like to get you out of your comfort zone, but really be intuitive about your body and constantly be asking yourself, is what I am feeling pain or discomfort?

If you are getting a pain sensation, recognize it as that, and you may need to come out of that pose that is causing the pain for a rest or a modification. Now, hopefully the physical rest won’t be long
term.

As you learn modifications that can help you build strength, and as you build strength in your surrounding areas, (like forearms, and fingers), that will help support the
wrist.

It is also important to remember as a beginner, that you are still the boss of you in a yoga class. Just because the teacher is telling you to do another vinyasa (sun-salutation), or a
side plank doesn’t mean that is what is best for you.

Take what feels good for you in yoga class, and take child’s pose through what you need to, so you feel good at the end of class.

I HIGHLY recommend for beginners just taking 1 or 2 vinyasas (sun-salutations) as you are getting started and building up strength.

In my beginner program that you can access below I always have just a few regular and modified vinyasas as you are just learning and building strength.

Final tip is that it is important to stretch/warm up the wrists before class.

Now, time is limited in yoga class, so not all teachers, myself included will take the time to stretch the wrists before every single class.

If you know wrists are an issue, make sure to stretch them.

I created a short little 5 min video that you can access right here for free that goes over my favorite wrist stretches.

To summarize my tips:

** Acknowledge if you are experiencing pain and rest if needed
** You are the boss of you in yoga class, modify and take just 1 or 2 sun salutations as you are just beginning
** Warm up and stretch your wrist area
