Jabir bin Hayyan was the first to lay the foundations of scientific and experimental chemical research methods. In his laboratory, he conducted experiments on sublimation, crystallization, filtration, extraction, and distillation. He developed systematic experimentation techniques inside and outside chemical research, so that each experiment could be reproduced again. Jabir emphasized that the quantity of substances was related to the chemical reactions that took place, so that it could be considered that Jabir had pioneered the discovery of a fixed comparison law.
Jabir Bin Hayyan was able to apply his knowledge in chemistry into the process of making iron and other metals, as well as rust prevention. He was also the first to apply the use of manganese dioxide in glass making. Jabir Bin Hayyan also first noted that warming wine would cause flammable gases. This then gave way for Al-Razi to find ethanol.
Some of Jabir Bin Hayyan's inventions include: hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, citric acid, acetic acid, distillation techniques and crystallization techniques. He also invented the aqua regia solution, by combining hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, which is useful for dissolving gold. The decomposition of some acids is contained in one of his manuscripts entitled Shunduq al-Hikmah.
He wrote the results of experiments, articles, and books of no less than 3000 topics. 500 of them are scientific treatises about chemistry which are very important in the world of science and human civilization. He also established a number of laboratories, not only in chemistry but also in physics and biology. His research, in the western world referred to as The Jabirian corpus. Among his most popular works in the West are: Book af The Composition of Alchemy or the Book of Al-Kimya translated by Robert of Chester, The Work of Geber, the Sun of Perfection, and the book of Stone.
Jabir's writings were also translated by Marcelin Berthelot into several books entitled, Book of the Kingdom, Book of the Balances and Book of Eastern Mercury. Some technical terms invented and used by Jabir have also become part of the scientific vocabulary in the international world, such as the term "Alkali" and so on.
