In this video, I discuss the cause of skin tags and treatment options. Skin tags are usually benign and harmless. However, they can become irritated and cause discomfort especially if caught on clothes. The exact mechanism of skin tags is not known, however, we do know that there are several factors that contribute to their formation. Age, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity are some of the factors that make people more prone to skin tags. There are hormonal imbalances with insulin resistance that make people more prone to getting skin tags. Pregnancy is also another factor that can cause skin tags.

There are treatment options available for skin tags. People can resort to surgical or non surgical options.

Medical Procedures:

Cauterization or Electrocautery: A healthcare professional may use heat or electricity to burn off the skin tag.
Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the skin tag, causing it to fall off.
Surgical Removal: A doctor can surgically cut off the skin tag using scissors or a scalpel. This procedure typically involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic.

Over-the-Counter Treatments:

Topical Treatments: There are over-the-counter creams and solutions available that claim to remove skin tags. These usually contain ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil. However, their effectiveness can vary, and it's essential to follow the instructions carefully.
Skin Tag Removal Devices: Some devices are designed for home use and claim to remove skin tags by cutting off their blood supply. These typically involve tying off the base of the skin tag until it falls off.

Home Remedies:

Tying Off: You can tie off a skin tag at its base using a piece of dental floss or thread to cut off its blood supply. Eventually, the skin tag should fall off.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Applying apple cider vinegar to the skin tag multiple times a day may cause it to shrink and fall off. However, this method may take several weeks to show results.
Tea Tree Oil: Applying tea tree oil to the skin tag daily may help dry it out and eventually cause it to fall off.
