In this video, Diana Bytyqi, DNP, FNP-C discusses the link between Diabetes and Dementia. There have been numerous studies to show the link between Diabetes and Dementia. Some of the possible links are related to insulin resistance leading to cognitive decline. Insulin sensitivity is crucial for proper brain function. As a result, when we have insulin resistance, as do people with diabetes, that in fact, places people at higher risk for dementia. Vascular issues also that are commonly seen in diabetic patients is a common risk factor for vascular dementia-- a type of dementia.
Hypoglycemia- which is a low blood sugar event, also commonly seen with diabetics, is another risk factor. Recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia places one at higher risk for developing dementia in the future.
Inflammation and amyloid beta are commonly seen with dementia which can also be seen with people with diabetes.
In this video, I also discuss how to prevent dementia if you have diabetes. There are steps that one can take to reduce the chances of possibly developing dementia. Some of the steps that patient's can take include regular exercise, eating healthy and of course, staying happy and positive.
