The mythical Olympus - seat of the gods. At 2,918 m, the summit of Mytikas is the highest elevation in Greece. The 30x40 km area attracts many mountaineers and hikers every year.
As an absolute Greece fan, a visit to Zeus, the father of the gods, was a declared goal for me. That's why my friend Michael and I decided to go on "Expedition Olympus".
The gods were good to us from the start: the taxi driver who took us from the hotel "Mediterranean Village" to the starting point Prionia was called Sakis Prokovas.Sakis is considered an absolute insider. He was born at the foot of Mount Olympus in Litochoro and knows this area like no other. Sakis has taken part in several Olympus marathons and other ultra runs. Today, he drives with his taxi mountaineers and hikers from all over the world through the fantastic landscape of Mount Olympus. During the driving he informs them about all that is essential for climbers to know. Sakis gave us important advices and a motto during our short meeting: " Have respect for the mountain! - Not fear, but respect." For an unforgettable experience without stress, you should plan an overnight stay below the summit chain - either the evening before the ascent or (like us) the evening of the descent. A first-class address for this is the accommodation of Maria Zolotas and her husband Dionysios: Refuge A, Spilios Agapitos at 2,100 m altitude. This is where the mountaineering world from Asia to America meets. We really appreciated and enjoyed Maria's hospitality. A reservation is highly recommended:

From the Prionia mountain station to the Skala peak it is mostly a normal hiking trail, partly over scree, with fantastic views. From the Skala peak to Mytikas, you should be sure-footed and not afraid of heights, but wear a safety helmet. Especially in the main wall of the Mytikas, there is an acute danger of falling rocks with larger groups of climbers. Once you reach the top, you have an impressive view in all directions. The entry in the summit book is the reward for effort and sweat.Mount Olympus is feared as a "cloud collector", a storm with thunderstorms and hail can come up very quickly here, there is no real shelter up here.
After the successful descent, we recommend a visit to the famous ancient site of Dion, at the foot of Mount Olympus. Among others, the legendary general Alexander the Great came here in 333 BC to pay homage to the gods and celebrate with his fighters before his great campaign.

От горной станции Приония до вершины Скала в основном идет обычная пешеходная тропа, частично по осыпям, с фантастическими видами. От вершины Скала до Митикаса вы должны быть уверены в своих ногах и не испытывать головокружения, но наденьте защитную каску. Особенно на главной стене Митикаса существует острая опасность падения камней при больших группах альпинистов. Как только вы оказываетесь на вершине, открывается впечатляющий вид во всех направлениях.
