Hollywood, the most famous district of Los Angeles, still exerts an enormous fascination. Nicknamed the "Dream Factory", this place was and remains the center of the US film industry. Literally translated, Hollywood means "holly forest". First mentioned under this name in 1886, Hollywood has been part of the City of Angels (Los Angeles) since 1910.

L.A. is the largest city in the United States after New York City. It currently has almost 4 million inhabitants, in the metropolitan region there are already around 19 million people. Of course there are many actors in Los Angeles: around 300,000! The dream factory remains a dream for most of them: only 5% of the actors have a job here from which they can make a living. The remaining 285,000 earn money as photographers, painters or waiters.

If you visit Hollywood, you will find plenty of accommodation here (outside of the Oscars, which take place once a year). Famous sights and attractions are of course the Hollywood Sign, the Walk of Fame, the Dolby Theater and Universal Studios.

Hollywood Sign: The nine white letters of the landmark stand out from afar against the earth-colored background of the Hollywood Hills. In the early 1920s, the illuminated term "Hollywoodland" could still be read here. The lettering has had its current appearance since 1978. Each of the nine enameled letters was auctioned off and renewed by an artist, media mogul or well-known institution for US$27,700. For example, after the "Y" is the editor of "Playboy" Hugh Hefner, the third "O" was sponsored by rock musician Alice Cooper. The dimensions of the lettering are enormous: at almost 140 meters as long as the Jumbo Jet Boeing 747 and at 14 meters as high as a five-story building, with supporting elements this structure has a weight of 220 tons, i.e. approx. 157 average cars.

Walk of Fame: Around 10 million visitors stroll down the most famous sidewalk in the world every year. There are currently more than 2,700 stars for artists in the five categories "film, television, theatre, music and radio" integrated into the footpaths. Each slab of black marble and antique rose terrazzo with the brass category symbol is a good 90 cm tall and weighs 136 kg. Show business legends were immortalized, including Louis Armstrong, Charles Bronson, Charlie Chaplin, Celin Dion, Harrison Ford, Elvis Presley, Sylvester Stallone, Meryl Streep, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the German composer Hans Zimmer.

Dolby Theatre: the coveted Oscars have been awarded in the former Kodak Theater since 2002. The festive event takes place with 3,400 guests on one of the largest theater stages in the USA. Winning the 34 cm tall and around 4 kilogram statue made of gold-coated bronze makes its owner a legend, not only in California.

Universal Studios: since 1964, those who are interested have been able to look behind the scenes of the film business. With almost 10 million visitors, Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the top ten most popular amusement parks in North America. Three recommended main attractions:

1. Studio Tour: Here you can take mini trains for 45 minutes through the grounds of the studios. Impressive sceneries from film locations and small moments of shock are superbly staged and absolutely worth seeing.

2. The Stunt Show Water World. Here you can experience one of the world's most spectacular action shows. Well-known actors from films or US series are involved.

3. The special effects show. Interesting insights into the box of tricks and possibilities of computer animation, presented in a humorous way.

The express ticket is recommended, it allows quick access to rides and shows as well as access to performers. It is more expensive, but there is hardly any waiting time and more options.

And the Oscar for the best cover goes to: Torsten Lorenz in Dresden!
