As I've done a fair amount of running at high altitude, the Beaverhead 100K falls reasonably within my discomfort 'comfort zone.' Every time I try another race or adventure up high, I turn various dials to prevent the dreaded bonk. But this time I turned the nutrition dial too far, consuming too many calories too fast, resulting in uncontrollable vomiting at just the wrong place in the course to work it out. I also arrived the day before the race, turning the pre-race acclimation dial to zero. Not optimal, don't do it if you don't have to. While this DNF was unexpected, it's all part of the game I so enthusiastically sign up to play. Tough day out there, but now I know more than I did yesterday. And it's all ok.
