Dorothy Taft Barre 16th General Hospital
Dorothy Taft Barre ("Barry") was born in July of 1918 in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was already a nurse when she joined the army at age 24, in 1943. Just after joining the Army she was sent to Ft. Devens where the 16th General Hospital was being formed. Here the doctors, nurses, dieticians, and other personnel would come together to create the medical team before going overseas. A General Hospital could handle up to 1000 patients if needed.
After arriving in England the hospital would leave there after several months and head to Normandy, landing at Utah Beach. Arriving in Europe Lt. Barre would experience extreme weather conditions, living in fields with mines, buzz bombs (V-1), and giving medical attention to the G.I.'s coming off the front lines.

This interview was recorded at a Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge reunion.
