Goal footage from the First Division match between Wolves and Nottingham Forest at Molineux on 10th September 1977.

In the previous season, both Wolves and Nottingham Forest had gained promotion to the First Division with Wolves promoted as champions ahead of Chelsea and Forest. The beginning of the 1977-78 season began well for Wolves and, with two wins and two draws from their opening four matches, manager Sammy Chung's team entered their match against Forest with a great deal of confidence.

Against Brian Clough's Forest, and generally throughout the remaining campaign, Chung relied upon the same core of experienced players that had played such a prominent role in winning the Second Division title the previous season. However, Chung had taken the decision to exclude long-serving centre-half Frank Munro from his team following a dispute between the pair and in December 1977, the cultured Scottish international finally ended his near-decade long career at Molineux and joined Celtic in a permanent deal following an earlier two month loan period. Munro's long-time defensive colleagues John McAlle, Derek Parkin and Geoff Palmer remained at Molineux though. They were complimented by midfielders Steve Daley and Willie Carr and centre-forward John Richards - top scorer for Wolves at the end of the 1977-78 season with 13 league and cup goals. Experienced midfielder Kenny Hibbitt was also an important part of Chung's team during the season, but he was absent for the match against Forest with a rib inury, while forwards Steve Kindon and Alan Sunderland figured in the early part of the campaign before their subsequent transfers to Burnley and Arsenal respectively.

Forest had also begun the 1977-78 season in fine form with three wins and just a solitary defeat at Arsenal in their opening four matches, resulting in a position of 4th in the league ahead of Wolves in 5th. Remarkably, for a team that had been promoted just a season before, Forest won the First Division title and added the League Cup following their narrow defeat of Liverpool after a replay. In a further highly commendable achievement that season, Forest's 0-0 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion on 26th November 26 1977 signalled the beginning of 42 consecutive league matches without defeat; an unbeaten run that extended into the following season before being ended with defeat at Liverpool on 9th December 1978. A small part of Forest's unbeaten run came at the expense of Wolves in a match at the City Ground on 4th February 1978 (   • Nottingham Forest v Wolves, 4th Febru...  ).

Wolves, in complete contrast, struggled for the remainder of the 1977-78 season and, with just three matches remaining, were in the relegation zone. However, a timely trio of wins over Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town helped secure their survival and a final league position of 15th.
