Extended highlights of a First Division match between Everton and Wolves at Goodison Park on 23rd September 1978.

Wolves had begun the 1978-79 season in poor form, with their opening six matches yielding just one win, five defeats and a position just one place off the bottom of the league. In addition, Wolves had been eliminated from the second round of the League Cup following a defeat at Fourth Division Reading.

Since returning to the First Division following their promotion in the 1976-77 season, Wolves had struggled for goals. Although striker John Richards continued to be a highly effective goal threat, he was badly hindered by a knee injury. After just two appearances at the beginning of September, Richards underwent an operation on his troublesome right knee the following month. His return to the Wolves team on 24th February 1979 and subsequent nine goals in seventeen appearances was a prime factor in Wolves avoiding relegation that season.

With Richards and fellow striker Billy Rafferty both absent, manager Sammy Chung continued with his attempts at finding a solution to Wolves' goal scoring problems by selecting a fluid forward line of Norman Bell, Wayne Clarke and Steve Daley. However, the possibility of goals from elsewhere in the Wolves team was significantly reduced by the absence of midfielder Kenny Hibbitt. His loss through injury also placed a further responsibility on Willie Carr in particular to add creativity to the Wolves midfield.

In contrast to Wolves, Everton had begun the season in fine form with their early position of second in the league reflecting their unbeaten start to the campaign. Everton's early season promise was a continuation of the generally positive beginning to Gordon Lee's tenure at Everton, demonstrated by finishes of ninth and third in the league and appearances in the League Cup final and FA Cup semi-final. Everton's relative success under Lee was largely due to the prolificacy of striker Bob Latchford - his thirty goals in the 1977-78 season being the most notable success.

Everton included in their team two players who later briefly served Wolves; talented winger Dave Thomas arrived at Molineux in October 1979 but left after just sixteen first team appearances, while popular midfielder Andy King joined in January 1985 and scored a highly creditable ten goals in thirty appearances for a rapidly declining Wolves team. Wolves striker Wayne Clarke later represented Everton following his transfer from Birmingham City in March 1987 and, in the final months of the season, contributed five goals in ten appearances to help Everton win the title.
