Full highlights of a First Division match between Manchester City and Wolves at Maine Road on 1st December 1979.

The 1979-80 season represented the last time Wolves achieved a notable measure of success in the top flight of English football. The campaign ended with Wolves in a creditable sixth position in the league and, most memorably, victorious in the League Cup Final against Nottingham Forest on 15th March 1980.

A prime reason for the high league position attained by Wolves that season was their impressive away form; ten wins away from Molineux was, in terms of away success, equalled only by Arsenal and league champions Liverpool. Against Malcolm Allison's Manchester City, with midfielder Kenny Hibbitt in particularly fine form, Wolves produced a superb attacking performance that was also replicated a few months later at Norwich City (   • Norwich City v Wolves, 23rd February ...  ). For their match at Maine Road, manager John Barnwell fielded ten of the line-up that defeated Forest in the League Cup Final - the only absentee being Mel Eves who was replaced by left winger Dave Thomas in what ultimately proved to be a rare Wolves appearance.

An attendance of almost 34,000 witnessed opposing million pound players in Manchester City midfielder Steve Daley, once of Wolves, and striker Andy Gray. City, who were twelfth in the First Division (a point behind tenth placed Wolves), also included in their team Polish international Kazimierz Deyna and the precociously talented centre half Tommy Caton who had made his debut for City at the start of the season aged 16.

Originally broadcast by Granada TV's 'The Kick Off Match' with Gerald Sinstadt providing commentary and post-match interview with Andy Gray.
