Brief highlights of a Second Division match between Wolves and Derby County at Molineux on 30th October 1982.

Following their relegation from the First Division at the end of the 1981-82 season, with the existence of the club in grave doubt due to crippling debts of £2.4 million, Harry Marshall resigned as chairman of Wolves. The Official Receiver was subsequently called in and with the club just minutes away from extinction, a consortium fronted by former player Derek Dougan took control on 30th July 1982. On 1st August, manager Ian Greaves was sacked and replaced the very same day by Dougan's former Wolves teammate Graham Hawkins.

For the opening two matches of the 1982-83 season, Hawkins fielded the youngest ever team in Wolves' history with a total of eight players aged twenty one or under (including substitute Paul Butler). However, throughout the remainder of the season, Hawkins largely relied upon a core of very experienced players; Kenny Hibbitt, Andy Gray, Peter Daniel, Mel Eves and Geoff Palmer were all part of the club's 1980 League Cup winning team, with goalkeeper Paul Bradshaw displaced by the much-travelled John Burridge. Gordon Smith added further experience to the Wolves midfield, while veteran centre half Alan Dodd was signed from Stoke City in November and immediately displaced youngster Bob Coy. Hawkins, though, still proved willing to entrust youth, giving debuts to eighteen year old Ian Cartwright and nineteen year old Dale Rudge to add to the first team debuts at the start of the season of centre forward Billy Livingstone, winger Paul Butler and full back David Wintersgill.

The talented Wayne Clarke had gradually become established at Wolves following his 1978 first team debut as a 17 year old and became an integral part of Hawkins' team. Centre halves Bob Coy and John Pender, midfielder Mick Matthews and full back John Humphrey began to appear with more regularity for Wolves towards the end of the 1981-82 season.

Ahead of the visit of Derby, Wolves had lost just once in their opening ten matches - a 3-0 defeat at home to Leicester City in their previous match. Against Derby, Paul Butler made his first start to add to his previous three substitute appearances earlier in the season.

While Wolves were fourth in the league following their positive start Derby County, in contrast, had begun the season badly, with just one win in eleven matches to leave The Rams just one place above the bottom of the Second Division. Included in John Newman's Derby team was centre half John McAlle who provided fine service to Wolves during his thirteen year career at Molineux.
