Music connects people across national borders. Some pieces of music are so touching and inspiring that you recognize them right after the first few sounds.

This also applies to "Schdschedryk" ("Щедрик"), also known in the English-speaking world as "Carol of the Bells". Originally this melody comes from an old Ukrainian folk song. Schdschedryk literally means "the generous one". The original text is originally about a swallow that flies into a family's house and reports of happiness and prosperity that can be expected in the coming year.

The composer Mykola Leontowitsch arranged this work in 1916 into a version for a four-part mixed choir. In Ukrainian families this song is sung for the old New Year celebrations on January 13th and 14th.
Schdschedryk became world famous after 1936 when it was given a Christmas-themed English text. Today "Carol of the Bells" is one of the most popular Christmas carols in the Anglo-American region.
Hollywood and other film studios also used this melody in various films, including "Home Alone" and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

In my film, the artist Bohodar Shved interprets this piece of music.
It is an honor and matter of the heart for me to introduce this wonderful artist in a few words.

Bohodar Shved was born in Lviv (Lemberg), Ukraine. Here he studied flute and piano, as well as orchestral and opera conducting.

This was followed by masterclasses with Peter Eötvös, Sir Colin Davies and Juri Simonov (longstanding chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow).

Bohodar Shved assisted Kiril Petrenko and Kazushi Ono at the Lyon Opera, among others. Guest conductors have taken him to Ostrava (Czech Republic), Freiburg (Germany) and Barcelona.


He was also engaged as co-conductor of Dennis Russel Davies with the Munich Philharmonic.
Today Bohodar Shved leads several choirs in Switzerland, for example in Basel-Binningen, Bern or Zurich.

He also studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

His former teacher, Prof. Wolfgang Brunner, one of the world's leading lecturers for historical keyboard instruments, also known for numerous phonograms recordings and radio recordings, kindly wrote me the following text about his former student:

"Bohodar Shved shows me once again how happy you are teaching - I had a thirsty for knowledge and committed student," planted some musical cores "and a few years later I saw wonderful new blossoms come out on Bohodar's independent path! Life means: passing on life. "

"Schdschedryk" ( "Щедрик"),
Ursprünglich stammt diese Melodie von einem alten ukrainischen Volkslied. Schdschedryk heißt wörtlich übersetzt " der Großzügige". Der Originaltext handelt ursprünglich von einer Schwalbe, die einer Familie ins Haus fliegt und dabei von Glück und Wohlstand berichtet, welcher im kommenden Jahr zu erwarten ist.


Der Komponist Mykola Leontowitsch bearbeitete dieses Werk im Jahr 1916 zu einer Version für einen vierstimmigen gemischten Chor. In ukrainischen Familien wird dieses Lied zum alten Neujahrsfest, am 13. und 14. Januar gesungen.


In meinem Film interpretiert der Künstler Bohodar Shved dieses wunderbare Musikstück.
Es ist mit Ehre und Herzensangelegenheit zugleich, ihn hier etwas vorstellen zu dürfen.

Bohodar Shved assistierte unter anderem Kiril Petrenko und Kazushi Ono an der Oper von Lyon. Gastdirigate führten ihn nach Ostrava (Tschechische Republik), Freiburg (Germany) oder Barcelona. Er war außerdem als Co-Dirigent von Dennis Russel Davies bei den Münchener Philharmonikern engagiert.
Heute leitet Bohodar Shved mehrere Chöre in der Schweiz, zum Beispiel in Basel-Binningen, Bern oder Zürich.


Er studierte auch am Mozarteum in Salzburg.


Sein einstiger Lehrer, Prof. Wolfgang Brunner, einer der weltweit führenden Dozenten für Historische Tasteninstrumente, außerdem bekannt durch zahlreiche Platten- und Rundfunkaufnahmen schrieb mir zu seinem ehemaligen Studenten:
