There are 25+ scrolls in Dunhuang, which had been commissioned by the Tang court and produced in Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Empire. They are the very top of the line in terms of medieval Chinese manuscripts, beautiful and authoritative in every way. They were produced in the 670s during the reign of Emperor Gaozong and contain the Lotus sutra and the Diamond sutra. So even though they were found in Dunhuang, they had not been produced there. Instead, they were send there from the capital during the period when Dunhuang (known as Shazhou, the Prefecture of Sand) was still part of the Tang Empire. This video is a brief introduction to these, explaining their unique features and significance.
