This brutal 1983 remake of the 1958 classic Japanese film is a welcome approach, not as staged as the original, the remake takes the cruelty and brazenness only hinted at in the 1958 version and ramps it up to 11.

Imamura's edition of The Ballad of Narayama is a hard hitting story of a remote village faced with limited food during a desperate winter. The only way they have survived through the ages is keeping their population in check, and when a person reaches the age of 70 they are expected to make the spiritual journey up the Narayama mountain to surrender their lives to the elements. A powerful film that asks a lot of very difficult questions about the nature of survival.
