The trailer for Werewolf by Night dropped recently, and I think it's safe to say it was NOT what we've come to expect from Marvel. (In a good way!) The trailer was jam-packed with horror iconography, grindhouse horror aesthetics, and campy B-movie horror and...splatters. So it begs the question: What should we expect from Marvel with this new title? If it leans hard into its horror movie tropes and elements, what does that mean for the MCU going forward into Phase 5, 6, and beyond?

The MCU Phase 4 has been an...interesting time. Marvel and Disney+ have churned out a TON of new superhero films, TV shows, and even short films. Some, like Loki, WandaVision, and Spider-Man: No Way Home have been truly spectacular. Others, have been...not bad, but not amazing, either. But, titles like Multiverse of Madness and WandaVision (and She-Hulk, though the jury is still out on how I feel about that one) have at least shown us that Marvel Phase 4 is experimenting with it's choices, styles, and genres.

Sam Raimi, in particular, got more room to play with Doctor Strange 2, infusing it with his peculiar brand of dark comedy, horror, and camera and editing styles. Given what we've seen from this Werewolf by Night trailer, I really hope that means they are going even harder in giving directors room to explore and play. Let's talk about what that could mean!
