Stories of mermaids span all cultures and continents.  Half woman half fish, for some she is the harbinger of doom, for others an aid in times of trial and, as is the case in this song, a love who has had to return to her watery world.   Mary Kenny now swims in Lough Erne, leaving behind the sorrowful father and their two young children. 
It is thought that this song originated in Tory Island off the Donegal coast but the text appears elsewhere under a different melody by the excellent Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin.
