Active in the mid 18th century, ulsterman Peadar Ó Doirnín, lead an eventful life, a fact reflected in poetry that provided political or social commentary, at times attacked enemies and of course veered into matters of the heart. Mná na hÉireann (Women of Ireland) is one such poem. The modern incarnation of this poem has two modern legendary cultural figures associated with it. Peadar Ó Riada composed the melody to mark the 200 anniversary of Ó' Doirnín's death in 1969 and it was first sung by Seán Ó Sé in The Gaiety Theatre, Dublin in  1969.

Even though the old message of this song was linked more with describing the romantic life of Ó Doírnín, and the women that he met, there is a renewed relationship with this song now adays, regarding feminism. Listen out for the fanfare saluting at the beginning of the song, calling all the women of Ireland today!

Bhí saol eachtrach ag an Ultach Peadar Ó Dóirnín san ochtú haois déag agus tá se fós le feiceáil ina gcuid filíochta. Filíocht a tá lán le tráchtaireacht ar chursaí polaitiúla, uaireanta le hionsaí a chur ar a naimhde, agus gan amhras, tá siad lán le tráchtaireacht ar chúrsaí grá. Tá léargas maith ar na dearcthaí seo sa dán Mná na hÉireann. Sa lá atá inniu ann, tá beirt ardfhir cultúrtha ag baint leis. Chum Peadar Ó Riada and fonn sna seascaidí chun bás an fhile a chomóradh dhá chéad bhliain roimhe sin, agus chas Seán Ó Sé é, don chéad uair riamh in Amharclann an Gaiety, i mBaile Átha Cliath, sa bhliain 1969.

Cé go raibh an seantheachtaireacht níos mó ag baint le cur síos ar an saol rómánsach a bhí ag Ó Dóirnín agus na mná a bhuail leo, tá athchaidreamh ag an amhrán inniu, ó thaobh feimíneachas de. Éist amach i gcomhair an gleadhartha cúirtéisigh ag tosach an amhráin, ag cur glaoch ar mhná na hÉireann ar fad inniu!
