Watch and learn how a card scraper is used to level a custom wood inlay banding in a picture frame. Some woodworkers may be tempted to use a hand plane or a power sander in this situation. However, that can lead to complications as the shop-made wood inlay banding has been ripped to 3/32" on the bandsaw. Planing or sanding too low could ruin the inlay banding. Also, keep in mind that there is a variety of wood grain directions with all the wood segments of the inlay banding. Using a hand plane could create tear out.

A better solution is understanding how to use a card scraper. It is great for removing glue squeeze out and leveling the glue lines. It works well when dealing with various grain directions. The card scraper allows the woodworker to level the wood inlay banding to the picture frame. Then a light sanding with a higher grit sandpaper can prepare for the wood finish.
