Watch and learn how to inlay wood pyramids into a decorative cherry picture frame. A woodworker can use wooden pyramids to accent & adorn picture frames and other woodworking projects.

The cherry wood pyramids of this picture frame actually serve a few purposes. 1.) The pyramids are a decorative element for the picture frame. 2.) The pyramids serve as a distinctive transition for the diamond wood inlay banding at the miter joint.

Because the wooden pyramids have been inlaid at the corners, the design of the diamond wood inlay banding can be balanced in its appearance. It is just a simple matter of centering each of the four banding lengths to their specific dado. Then mark each end of the banding. Then cut, fit, & glue each length of banding in place.

Sometimes when working with wood inlay banding we have designs in the inlay banding where it is difficult to achieve a matching inlaid miter joint on all four sides. As a result, the appearance of the work can appear off. Ornamental elements such as the wood pyramids serve a purpose being just being pleasing to the eye.

Careful layout is required to inlay the wooden pyramids. Notice how the woodworker scribes the layout lines at the miter joints. In this case, the woodworker is demonstrating hand tool skills by working with a mallet and chisel to cut the mortises. (A trim router could also be used for this purpose.)
