Watch and learn how to cut, fit, & glue the core wood inlay banding for the Cosmati #2 design. The wood inlay banding is comprised of wooden squares and triangles that are crosscut on the band saw. Shop-made band saw crosscut sleds along with clamped stop blocks allow for uniform segments. Keep in mind, the setup and measuring for segment cuts are crucial to the integrity of the overall banding pattern. As a result, measuring and testing the segments for accuracy with a dial caliper is imperative.

Notice that the woodworker has a plan for his wood inlay banding with all the necessary measurements. This allows one to work with confidence knowing that the math is done prior to entering the workshop. It is now just a matter of making test cuts, measuring, and adjusting the stop block on the cross cut sled. Once the correct measurement is obtained, it is just a simply matter of making repetitive cuts to produce the amount of segments needed.

Blue tape is used with the sticky side up when gluing the segments. This allows for the initial row of segments to be in alignment. Then it is a matter of gluing the next course of segments in place with white glue. White glue allows for a longer setting time than say a yellow glue. Patience is necessary in this woodworking procedure and the white glue allows one more time to make any adjustments.

This wood inlay banding is inspired by the 12th century marble work of the four generations of Cosmati family. This family was commissioned by the Papal States to adorn the churches in and near Rome with architectural elements which contained stylish designs of sacred geometry. Floors, facades, walls, and podiums were embellished with numerous colors of marble by these marble masons.
