Highlights of a Football League Division One fixture between Wolves and Derby County at Molineux on 30th August 1995.

Following their unfortunate defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the Division One Play-off's the previous season, Wolves were considered to be one of the favourites to achieve promotion to the Premier League in 1995-96. Wolves, though, entered their match against Derby having drawn their opening two matches of the campaign against Tranmere Rovers and West Bromwich Albion, followed by an abject performance and defeat at Sunderland that left Graham Taylor's team in a lowly 21st position in the league.

Taylor had added just one player of significance to his squad at the start of the season; talented centre-half Dean Richards was signed from Bradford City for £1.85m following a successful loan to Wolves towards the end of the previous season. With former captain Peter Shirtliff transferred to Barnsley just days ahead of the match against Derby County, Richards partnered John De Wolf in the centre of the Wolves defence for the first time at Sunderland and continued their embryonic partnership against Derby.

Although the Wolves manager subsequently added three further signings in former Wimbledon centre-half Eric Young, South African international Mark Williams and Mark Atkins, signed from Blackburn Rovers for £1m, results and performances remained generally poor and, with Wolves languishing in the lower reaches of the league, Taylor resigned in November 1995 following an uninspiring 0-0 draw against ten man Charlton Athletic at Molineux, a display that provoked voluble supporter unrest.

Derby had begun the 1995-96 season in the same manner as Wolves, with two draws and a defeat from their opening three matches. However, unlike Wolves, Jim Smith's team began a steady ascent of the league from mid-November that continued until their eventual promotion to the Premier League as runners-up to Sunderland.

Included in Smith's team at Molineux was striker Dean Sturridge, who ended the season with an impressive tally of 20 goals for Derby and who joined Wolves, initially on loan from Leicester City, in November 2001 for what would prove to be a productive goalscoring spell. Another subsequent connection to Wolves, courtesy of a seven game loan period in 1996, was provided by Robin van der Laan .
