Zambian Music records posted on Tuesdays and Fridays! My offering today is a dual song record featuring, Ka Botolo / Wawina K.K. from Smokey Haangala. This one came out in 1983 with side A in Nyanja and side B in Tonga. This is a fun energetic record. Side A features a trumpet and a cool organ riff with live drums. Side B also has trumpets and appears to be a patriotic song that praises then Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda. A lot of artists were releasing patriotic songs in that era.

The record is a little noisy but the music shines through.

Smokey Haangala is easily one of my favorite Zambian artists of the 1980's. A university graduate, he worked an editor for the Zambian Daily Mail newspaper for a time before quitting and becomign a full time musician. Bold in the uncertain economic times of the 80's. He recorded and produced much of his music by himself, rocked an accordion and a drum machine on a bunch of songs and was a solid lyricist in about 5 languages. He released two albums and a load of singles though the 1980's until his death in 1989.. He's probably among the more prolific Zambian artists of his era.
