Zambian music records uploaded on Tuesdays and Fridays! A Tonga record from Smokey Haangala is my offering today. It comes from 1984 and features two separate songs. The first contains Smokey's famous accordion. The second features the accordion and traditional rhythms. The record is a bit noisy, but the music shines through.

Smokey Haangala is easily one of my favorite Zambian artists of the 1980's. He started out in the 1970's, playing in various bands in Lusaka while at University. After graduation, he went solo, recording two albums and a lot of singles from the 70's through the 1980's. He worked for a time as an editor for the Times of Zambia and the Daily Mail before quitting to focus solely on him music, a bold choice in 1980's Zambia. He recorded and produced much of his music by himself, rocked an accordion and a drum machine on a bunch of songs and was a solid lyricist in about 5 languages. He's probably among the more prolific Zambian artists of his era and I love his music.
