We were guests at IndiKar GmbH in Wilkau Hasslau (near Zwickau) and were able to take a closer look at the Trabant nT and even test it. The weather was just too bad for driving. Philipp B. from IndiKar answered every question we had.

The Trabant nT should pick up on the trend towards simplification and environmental responsibility, while not neglecting fun, emotions and safety. He benefits from the awareness, sympathy and attention that the Trabant brand is given. Thousands of fans were enthusiastic at the premiere of the concept car at the IAA 2009, and the Trabant nT was also awarded the innovation prize "365 places in the land of ideas". He also received the special prize "Living Unity" for his commitment to a coexistence of East and West. A company called "Trabant nT GmbH" was set up to take the project to series production, but funding has yet to be finalized before the project can proceed.

The vehicle is powered by a central asynchronous motor with an output of 47 kW, which draws its power from a lithium-ion battery. The charging time is around 8 hours at 230 volts and around 2 hours at 400 volts. The range is up to 100 miles, aided by the vehicle's 1.8 square meter solar roof, which supplies about 120 watts to support ventilation and other extraneous consumers. The maximum speed is 130 km/h. It is a prototype from 2008.
To understand why the Trabant nT didn't go into production, we have to go back in time. In 2008, the topic of "new mobility" did not exist in the form we see it in the 2020s. So the Trabant nT was ahead of its time. After the world premiere, interest in the vehicle was overwhelming and there were various stakeholders running scenarios to bring the vehicle to market.

Unfortunately, the concept of the vehicle was very early and the crisis of 2008/2009 also affected the automotive industry. Investments were therefore weighed very carefully. Although it would have been possible for a vehicle manufacturer like Neckar to produce the vehicle itself, developing the vehicle was not enough. In order to successfully launch such a vehicle on the market as a startup, operating models, service models and production options are required that are designed for a small series. This requires space and certain investments.
For this reason, IndiKar GmbH is still open to dialogue to perhaps get the entire vehicle on the road in the future.
