We started our walk at Nepcote Green, famous as the venue for the annual Findon Sheep Fair. The fair dates back to the C18, and would originally have had shepherds driving their flocks from all parts of the South Downs for auction.

Nepcote is effectively an extension of Findon, with just a handful of roads, though with a good percentage of older properties. Just a short walk from here and we were on the busy A24 Findon bypass. Despite the traffic and pollution, we were pleasantly surprised to see bees and butterflies right by the roadside. We did not linger long here, and soon made our way up Roger's Lane, a little track that continues up onto the downs. If one can ignore the constant background traffic noise, this is a wonderful location for birds and insects, as well as affording views to Cissbury Ring and the surrounding area. Here we were blessed with the sight and sound of a linnet. Though quite common, they rarely sit around long enough to be readily identified.

From Roger's Lane, we took the footpath to Findon Place. There has been a building on this site since C10, and it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The oldest part of the current house dates from C13. It has an extensive history with many links to royalty. In the present day, the house is a private residence, and available for event hire. More information may be found at https://www.findonplace.com/estate-hi....

As was so often the case at the time, a church would be sited very close to the grand house (or vice versa), and St John's church in Findon is no exception. Again, this has a vast history spanning centuries with its roots in C11. More information may be found by visiting https://sussexparishchurches.org/chur....

As well as the Brimstone butterflies in the church yard, one of the highlights of the entire walk was filming Common lizards. Whilst the name suggests they are common, and they are indeed widespread throughout the UK, capturing them on film can be rather difficult as they are always wary of predation.

Then up the downs for more views of the beautiful South Downs, as well as birds, bees and butterflies. As to follow this path for any distance would take us on a vast loop, it was a case of there-and-back, and then back down into Findon village. As well as the Sheep Fair, Findon is famous for racehorse training. There are also various buildings of note, including the old vicarage which is now the Findon Manor Hotel - a very impressive building in its own right, though surpassed by Findon Place in both age and grandeur.

The walk ended where we started at Nepcote Green, with the raucous chorus of Jackdaws and Carrion Crows!

All background and natural sounds were recorded during our time filming.
