In 1980, a new trolleybus, or trolleybus for short, from Hungary was tested in everyday operation in Weimar. The GDR Ministry of Transport planned to reintroduce trolleybus operation for energy policy reasons. Electric trolleybuses require only 20 percent of the energy of diesel vehicles and were therefore supposed to offer a more sustainable alternative.

Thiele, Head of the Motor Transport Department at the Ministry of Transport, explains the advantages of trolleybus transport compared to diesel vehicles and the planned reopening of the first routes in Weimar, Eberswalde and Potsdam in 1981.
