This archive material offers fascinating insights into the everyday lives of Berliners in the 1980s who lived right next to the Berlin Wall. Despite the Wall, barbed wire and watchtowers, people did not allow their attitude to life to be taken away from them.

On the western side of the Berlin Wall, a pub garden was created, allotment gardens were laid out and open spaces such as the Landwehr Canal in Kreuzberg were used for sunbathing - back then, there was no sign of the neighborhoods that are so sought-after today. The West Berlin author Klaus Hartung writes:
“What once rendered speechless, the concrete, becomes a writing board, a loudspeaker. It took a long time for the people's comments to come out of the toilets and onto the walls.”
