Pelvic organ prolapse is much more common than you might think! I’ve gotten a number of requests to make different videos surrounding prolapse—especially exercise-based videos for prolapse treatment—and I’ve been hesitant… because it’s been my experience that the proper treatment for prolapse really varies person to person.

The medical term “prolapse” is meant to describe the descent of an organ through its respective tube, whereas the medical suffix “-cele” is meant to describe a sort of bulging, or pouching.

→ Cystocele: bladder descending down and backwards, pouching into the front vaginal wall
→ Bladder prolapse: common misnomer meant to describe cystocele, as the bladder is not descending down and through the urethra
→ Urethrocele: urethra descending down and backwards, pouching into the front vaginal wall
→ Cystourethrocele: bladder & urethra together descending down and backwards, pouching into the front vaginal wall
→ Uterine prolapse: uterus descending down and through the vaginal canal
→ Vaginal vault prolapse: vaginal vault describes the top of the vagina, what remains after someone has their uterus surgically removed, the vaginal vault can also descend down and through the vaginal canal
→ Rectocele: rectum descending down and forwards, pouching into the back vaginal wall
→ Rectal prolapse: meant to describe the rectum descending down and through the anal canal, is sometimes a misnomer referring to rectocele
