Join us on a walk around Patching in West Sussex and its adjoining bluebell woods. An abundance of bluebells and butterflies far outweighed the less than perfect weather and lighting. Nothing beats the wonderful sights, sounds and scents of nature. Patching is located approximately 6 miles east of Arundel and 6 miles north-west of Worthing.

Due to its cinematic nature, this video is best watched on a large screen, such as a TV, to fully appreciate the visual detail and immersive aural experience we try to convey.

We started our walk in the centre of Patching, which is a mere hamlet on the south facing slopes of the South Downs. With hazy sunshine, and just a few periods of full sunshine, the conditions were rarely ideal for filming, but with limited time available to us, we thought this was our best opportunity.

There is evidence of human activity in the area dating back to 2500BC, and Patching was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Along the handful of lanes that comprise the village, a number of old cottages dating back to C17 and earlier may be found, along with rather grander residences of more recent periods.

To the west of the village is St John's church, which has its origins in the early C13. More information may be found at https://sussexparishchurches.org/chur....

Leaving the village, we headed into the adjoining ancient woodland. At this time of year, the wood anemones are just going over and their brilliant whites flowers are replaced with the carpets of bluebells. Using the drone, we tried to capture some unusual angles of this amazing display. Something that neither the drone nor camera could capture was the intoxicating scent of the bluebells, so sadly we are unable to share this with you!

In the less densely wooded areas, there are celandines and dandelions. With the haze clearing at times, the bright sun brought out countless butterflies, hoverflies and other insects. Among those we filmed were Orange-tip, Red Admiral, Peacock and Speckled Wood.

We could have wandered around the woodland for hours, but our little dog was getting rather tired! So, back to the village to view a few more cottages.

All background and natural sounds were recorded during our time filming.
