Mysteries are some of the most popular books on the market, but unlike my high school science teacher, just because they're popular doesn't mean they're easy.

To write a great mystery, you need a compelling sleuth to follow through the story, you need to have a coterie of compelling suspects, each with interesting motivations and you need to master the art of leaving behind a host of clues, like a bloody glove or a cum-stained afghan on a grandma's couch.

There are many different subgenres of the mystery from the hardboiled detective novel to the cozy mystery to the caper. We'll break down a few and examine their mechanics.
