Greenland Kayak build part two.

The ribs of this kayak are steam bend.
Steam bending is one of the most challenging parts in the traditional kayak building process. Oak or in this case ash are used as bending wood. The wood shouldn't be fully dry and is furthermore submerged under water for a few days. To define a straight section in the middle of each rib, the sides where the bend should form, are routed to a slightly thinner thickness. The most important step in bending is the choice of straight grain wood - get the most straight grained wood you can get and saw it parallel to the wood grain.
To define the length of each rib and thereby the shape and volume of the hull there are different methods - i recommend choosing one and trying it out with welding wire before cutting the rib stock to size.
Depending on the thickness of the ribs the steaming will take around 15 minutes.
