DESCRIPTION

TIP 1:
Have you already experienced lighting up the charcoal grill at a barbecue, and then smoke forms during the barbecue? And then your neighbours drop in to complain about the all the smoke. And then you wonder what went wrong.

Maybe it isn't really your fault.

Maybe you just got a bad sack of charcoal. Not every lump of charcoal is made the same. The production process can vary in time i.e. the charring process is either long or short. The longer the charring process is, the purer the charcoal is.

When the charring process is short, the less carbonisation occurs. This means that pieces of wood are left behind and these can certainly cause smoke, even though everything looks like charcoal. But if you take a close look at what caused the smoke, then you might see some wood residue in there. And this causes smoke, which is very annoying.

How can you find out now if coal is well-charred or not?

Well, that's hard to find out only by just looking at the bag. But price is usually a good indicator of quality. Cheap coal is very probably not charred as long as high-quality coal is. This is a good indicator of quality. And high-quality coal should definitely not smoke when it's lit.

TIP 2:
Imagine that these are two charcoal sacks, which are placed on top of each other. They rub against each other during transport. What happens if I do this with the chips? With enough force they might turn into crumbs, which you can't eat anymore. Exactly the same thing happens with charcoal. The longer the coals lie on top of each other and rub against each other, the smaller the pieces in the bag become and the more useless they become.

So here's my tip: Be careful when choosing charcoal.

Choose packs with large pieces. It's is more likely that the big chunks of coal will stay in tact during delivery. And as a second tip: If you remove a bag of charcoal from a pallet in a shop, make sure you take one from the upper layer and not from the bottom layer because there is a greater chance of getting a good bag of charcoal.

TIP 3:
Another important point, which is always underestimated, is the packaging i.e. the actual packaging of the charcoal sack. The point here is that it's not just used to label or to display the brand, but that the packaging also holds. It sounds trivial, but it's about making sure the sack won't tear as you load up your car to haul it away. So it has to be solid. And a second thing, an even more important point is that it protects the coal from moisture - especially during storage. You have to reckon with the fact that it simply penetrates the bag if it isn't protected enough. And once the coal is moist you simply cannot light it.

That's a guarantee.

So the solution is to look for charcoal bags that have multiple layers. Meaning that the packaging is multi-layered and that these multiple layers make the bag more secure and secondly, they prevent moisture from getting in. So look for bags that have a plastic membrane in between layers that provide 100% protection because that's how you'll get more use out of your charcoal.
