Featuring Suzhou Kun Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province

The Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan (CIUM) is proud to present, on April 13, 2019, a grand performance of kunqu, the classical opera of contemporary China, by the internationally renowned Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province, China. The opera to be staged is The Lute: Cai Bojie琵琶记: 蔡伯喈, a contemporary abridged production of the Lute by Gao Ming (fl. 1340s), a 700-year-old masterpiece of Chinese opera, and a drama on Chinese ideals and conflicts on serving the family and the nation.

Winning rave reviews since its premiere in early 2018, The Lute: Cai Bojie is a gem of contemporary kunqu opera. In the years to come, it will not only entertain audiences with exquisite music and acting-dancing (shenduan), but it will also stimulate discussions on Chinese culture, history, and notions of personhood. The Ann Arbor performance of The Lute: Cai Bojie makes a perfect occasion for CIUM to celebrate its decade-long presentation of Chinese arts and culture on the UM campus, and to say thank you to all who have enthusiastically supported its activities.
