There are streets in the city that are loved by the locals.
The sixth in our series on streets you should definitely visit is Central Park Avenue in Okinawa City.
Central Park Avenue, which rose to become the commercial center of Okinawa City, the second largest city in Okinawa Prefecture, was a microcosm of Okinawa's postwar reconstruction.
When the area, which was originally a supply storage site for the US military, was opened up, a commercial district targeting soldiers and civilian employees was created there, and during the Vietnam War, it flourished as a bustling nightlife district.
However, due to the return of Okinawa to the mainland and union struggles, the area was often off-limits, and as soldiers and civilian employees stopped coming due to the weak dollar and strong yen, the area was redeveloped in an effort to break away from dependence on the US military.
After that, due to the Large-Scale Retail Store Location Law, this area, which had previously been the best shopping area in the prefecture, began to hollow out.
And now, we visited Central Park Avenue, which is about to change again.
