Escaping war doesn't mean escaping the wounds of war. Even after refugees and other displaced people reach relative safety, we see trauma and injustice happen. The Netherlands, prized for its progressive attitudes and perceived hospitality, has maintained a policy of discouragement. This led to understaffed reception centers, curtailed rights, and long waiting times, meant to demoralize those who arrive.

People in forced migration need shelter, food, and medical care... But they also need a sense of belonging, the chance to experience joy, creativity, and the warmth of community—a welcome. That is why we launched Welcome Notes NL. Our music workshop leaders visit emergency reception centers, making music with children and their families. Making music allows participants to express themselves, play and create, and experience connection.
