It is the 4th day of our ride. We started today from Kargil towards Leh on Kargil-Leh highway (NH1), passing Namika La, Bodhkharbu and reached Zbayul- the invisible village.
Kargil is a city and a joint capital of the union territory of Ladakh, India. It is also the headquarters of the Kargil district. It is the second-largest city in Ladakh after Leh. Kargil is located 204 kilometres (127 mi) to the east of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, and 234 kilometres (145 mi) to the west of Leh. It is the centre point of the Suru River.
Before the Partition of India in 1947, Kargil was part of the wazarat (district) of Ladakh, a sparsely populated region with diverse linguistic, ethnic and religious groups, living in isolated valleys separated by some of the world's highest mountains.
Namika La or Namika Pass (12,198 ft), Pillar of the Sky Pass, is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas Zaskar Range in India along the Srinagar-Leh highway at 34°22′N 76°35′E.
Namika La is one of two high passes between Kargil and Leh, the other is the even higher Fotu La Pass.
The views are amazing - rolling rocky mountains all around, snow capped mountain tops in the distance, and the black tar highway snaking through it on both sides of the pass. There are no facilities or shops here, just a signboard.
Zbayul - The invisible village of ladakh
The village is hidden behind a gorge with only an access point. only few houses are there.
In 1948, as India was fighting Pakistan in Kashmir, the Pakistani army reached this village but bypassed it completely. Simply because hidden behind a gorge, with just one access point, the village was invisible to them. Legend has it that when the army of a neighbouring kingdom tried to invade the village, they were greeted with huge boulders falling off the gorge, which forced the army to retreat.
