After four hours of wait, we are allowed to ride (from Sonamarg) towards Zoji La, which is most dangerous pass in Srinagar - Leh highway.
Zoji La (sometimes Zojila Pass) is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas. It is in the Indian Union territory of Ladakh, Kargil district, Kashmir. Located in the Drass, the pass connects the Kashmir Valley to its west, with the Drass and Suru valleys to its northeast and the Indus valley further east.
Zoji La is about 100 km from Srinagar, the capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and 15 km from Sonmarg. It provides a vital link between Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley.
Zoji-La runs through the Kashmir valley to Ladakh. Situated at an altitude of 3528 m above sea level, it is one of the most treacherous passes in the world making it a favorite of many adventurers and thrill seekers, as well as bike riders
It runs at an elevation of approximately 3,528 metres (11,575 ft)(Zoji La zero point - 11649 ft), and is the third-highest pass after Fotu La & Namika La on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway. It is often closed during winter, though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to extend traffic to longer periods in winter. The Beacon Force unit and The Vijayak Force unit of the BRO are responsible for the clearing and maintenance of the road during winter. Driving through the pass in winter means driving between thick walls of ice on both sides.
Drass or Dras is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". It is at a height of 10,800 feet (3,300 m). Dras lies in the centre of the valley of the same name (Dras valley). Dras is 140 km from Srinagar and 63 km from Sonmarg. Kargil town is further 58 km after Dras on the national highway NH 1 from Srinagar towards Leh.

During the First Kashmir War, Zoji La was seized by Gilgit rebels in 1948 in their campaign to capture Ladakh. The pass was recaptured by Indian forces on 1 November in an assault codenamed Operation Bison, which achieved its objective primarily due to the surprising use of tanks by Indian forces. At the time, this was the highest altitude at which tanks had operated in a combat situation in the world.
