Situated at 4600 meters, Sapi is the highest settlement in Kargil region. Its about 70 KMs away from the main city and takes a little more than 2 hours to reach. On the way you see a man-made architectural marvel - the Shargole Monastery also known as Cave Monastery. It has an idol of Avalokiteshwara and wood-carved images of the Hindu goddess Tara Devi.

Do you know that the word Ladakh actually translates to “the land of Passes” and on this way too we crossed another pass called Sapi La. Its situated at the height of 14500 feet and has amazing scenery views all around including brown rugged terrain as well as snow-covered peaks in the same view.

Little ahead, we found another piece of nature’s beauty - a small waterfall which had probably just begun to melt. It was a joy to look at!

Sapi lake is a high altitude glacial lake situated next to the Gangchenmo glacier which feeds the lake. To reach the lake, it takes a 3-4 hours hike of about 6 kms through a scenic trail of alpine plants and flowers. A beautiful milky white stream also originates from the lake, with different, rare and unusual flowers and medicinal herbs at its banks. Iske alawa you also get to see Wild Rabbits, Marmots and Wild Yaks on the trail.

Color Changing - The Lake changes its color in 15 Days, sometimes it is Milky White and other times it is Turquoise Blue by a Phenomena which is unknown. Towards the end of the trail, the climb becomes more steep and this is where it started snowing as well as Star got a bit tired.

An important tip - we did the trek ourselves but post the trek we felt that it might be a better idea to take a local and experienced trek guide to ensure you take the best route as well as get an overall awesome experience. To hire a guide you can contact local travel agencies and contact for One such company

Sapi lake is very Big example of how global warming is affecting ladakh. Just like most villages in this region, the Sapi village is dependent on the lake for water needs. Many years earlier there was a wide lake along with the glacier, but as of now, the lake has been shrunk to its half within the last eight to ten years. Its a danger alarm for us to reduce the adverse impact of our activities on nature. Twe believe that its very important to ensure responsible tourism to preserve and conserve nature’s miracles like the Sapi lake.
