Alongside crimes against humanity, The Butcher of Baghdad was also convicted of willfull killing, illegal imprisonment, deportation and torture and was sentenced to death. In the wake of the September 11th attacks in the United States in 2001, the U.S government began the disarmament process of Iraq as they feared that Saddam might provide terrorist groups with chemical or biological weapons.

Saddam, however, didn’t fully cooperate with the investigations from UN weapons investigators which angered Great Britain and the United States, ultimately leading them to suspect that Saddam Hussein had provided weapons of mass destruction to Al-Qaeda.

On March 17th 2003, George W Bush demanded that Saddam step down as President of Iraq in 48 hours or face war. Saddam refused the orders and the US & allied forces launched an attack on Iraq on March 20th.

The first saga of the Iraq War was an assault by US aircraft on a bunker complex where Saddam was thought to be hiding. Although this attack failed to kill the Iraqi leader, the subsequent attacks directed at Saddam was a clear indication that eliminating him was a major goal of the US invasion.

On April 9th, Baghdad fell to U.S soldiers and Saddam went into hiding and evaded capture for over 8 months. During the months in hiding his two sons were killed as part of the resistance against the allied invasion and eventually on December 13th Saddam was pulled from an underground hiding place near a farmhouse in Tikrit. He was armed but surrendered to US forces without firing a shot, he knew his time had come.
