Sid Vicious was born John Simon Ritchie on 10th May 1957 and was raised in the London suburb of Lewisham.

John Ritchie became one of the most iconic punks in London during the 70s and was known for his edgy, rebellious persona and self-destructive tendencies. After dropping out of high school he became one of the many troubled youths that embraced the punk spirit of anarchy and rebellion.

Whilst round at a friends house called John Lydon, he was bitten by Lydon’s hamster Sid, and exclaimed that ‘He’s a vicious little bugger isn’t he’ and thus the nickname of Sid Vicious was born and John Simon Ritchie, was ditched.

Vicious’s deshevlled appearance, spiky hair and give no fucks attitude made him the ideal replacement for Glen Matlock in London’s hottest punk band, the Sex Pistols which Vicious joined in 1975. They were fronted by Vicious’s friend John Lydon, who had now become Johnny Rotten and were managed by Malcolm Mclaren, who also ran a boutique called SEX where every punk got their outfits. The shop was managed by Mclaren and his girlfriend Vivienne Westwood and it’s attic was the location for the Sex Pistol’s first rehearsals.

Despite never having picked up a Bass Guitar, Sid Vicious became the face of Punk and alongside Johnny Rotten, the Sex Pistols became one of the leading forces in popular music. The band played fast paced, in-your-face songs that expressed angst and frustration about the social and political conditions of the time.

Unlike bands from previous generations, the Sex Pistols had absolutely no interest in producing hits or pleasing anyone apart from themselves. During a live television interview in 1976, they spewed so many profanities that they were dropped from their record label and this wasn’t their only controversy.

On the single ‘God Save The Queen’, Johnny Rotten insulted Queen Elizabeth II by saying that ‘she ain’t no human being’ and that she was also running a ‘fascist regime’. The single was released in 1977, the same year that the Queen was celebrating her Silver Jubilee for 25 years at the throne. This angered thousands of Britons and the band were attacked physically on many occasions and were often unable to find places to perform, in the United Kingdom.
Despite this, the Sex Pistols sold many records and certainly struck a chord in the heart’s of most during 1977.

That same year, Sid Vicious met an American woman called Nancy Spungen and it was love at first site with the pair becoming inseparable. She accompanied Sid on the Sex Pistol’s brief tour of United States in early 1978 which lasted for 8 shows, before the band fell apart.

Sid and Nancy spent some time in London before moving to New York City in the Summer and settling at the Chelsea Hotel which had been home to many musicians, artists and writers over the years. Nancy took over as Sid’s manager and got him a few gigs in New York however his performances were lacklustre and the pair were both heavy into drugs at the time. They did try to get clean briefly however they eventually gave in to feeding their drug habit which included heroin, barbiturates and morphine.

Sometime during the early hours of October 12th, 1978, the couple’s downward spiral reached a tragic end. Nancy Spungen was found dead on the bathroom floor of their room in the Chelsea Hotel. She had been stabbed with a knife that she had given to Sid as a present. He was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder.

A few days later Vicious was released on bail using money put up by his record company. Destroyed over Nancy’s death, Sid tried to commit suicide whilst out on bail by cutting his wrists, but was found in time. After a fight in a New York City club, Sid Vicious was back behind bars and spent 7 weeks on Riker’s Island.

Sid Vicious was released on1st February 1979 and celebrated his freedom by attending a party hosted by Michelle Robinson. It was at this party that he ate his last meal of a Spaghetti Bolognese before he was found dead of a heroin overdose the next morning by his mother.
