Should You Store Your Cigars In Cellophane?

Most cigars are sold or delivered with a cellophane wrapping. Many people ask whether this is best left on or removed. Although this has been a subject of a lot of debate over the years, the simplest answer is that it depends!

Firstly, be aware that cellophane is not plastic. Therefore, it doesn't seal your cigars and lets them breathe. This means that your cigars will still be affected by the humidity in their environment.

However, the humidity exchange is seven times less than what it would be when cigars are unwrapped. As such, it has an impact on how you may want to store them. If you're just going to leave them in the humidor, they will benefit from an improved humidity exchange without the wrapper. However, if you will be taking them out or travelling with them, the wrapper will help reduce humidity loss.

With regards to tainting flavours by different cigars exchanging oils, this is unlikely to have an effect on your cigars unless they will be left to age over the course of several years.

One scenario where cellophane will be highly beneficial to your cigars is that they will protect yours from beetle infestation. If stored in higher humidity, you may experience some beetles that will burrow small holes in your cigars. If they're wrapped in cellophane, they may manage to eat their way out but will die soon after. However, if the cigars are unprotected, the beetles will lay eggs and spread to other cigars very quickly.

Finally, if you like to travel, cellophane wrappers offer an extra level of protection and will cushion the cigars from knocks and drops when stored in a loose container. This is worth keeping in mind if you often use a travel humidor.

In this end, keeping cellophane on cigars is a matter of personal preference and largely depends on your own usage habits! However, their are advantages to both!
