Before our visit of Davidoff's facilities came to an end, Klaas Kelner took the time to explain to use why their cigars are wrapped in cellophane. Watch this video to learn why Davidoff Cigars are wrapped in cellophane and why you should keep it rather than take them out.

Why Are Cigars Sealed & Wrapped In Cellophane?

After the bands have been applied to the cigars, they are given the night for the adhesive to rest.

There are many reasons that cellophane is used. As it is a natural product made from trees, it is porous. Therefore, humidity can be exchanged in and out. As such, leaving it inside the humidor will allow for it to be stable and breathe.

Klaas doesn't favour removing it when storing cigars and says that Davidoff is pro-cellophane. It is not plastic and environmentally friendly.

However, it means that the cigar isn't protected if left out in hot conditions. Nevertheless, it will preserve humidity for a couple of days.

Over 7% fewer cigars are damaged or rejected when shipped when wrapped in cellophane. Therefore, it also protects it after it has been made.

Cellophane also concentrates the cigar's aromas. You can see this when it begins to turn yellow as it is preserving the flavour rather than allowing the oils to evaporate.

This also prevents different cigars from tainting one another if stored together in a humidor. However, aroma transfer will happen over several years even with cellophane.

Finally, there is also a consideration for hygiene as the cigars will be handled directly less than those that aren't. For instance, Davidoff is very strict with hygiene standards in its own factories. However, there is no knowing what happens once it has been shipped.
