Cigar Storage Relative Humidity - Which RH To Choose For Your Collection With Boveda

Firstly, for wood desktop humidors, you'll probably want to use 72% relative humidity Boveda packs. This is because you probably want to shoot for the high 60s in RH.

Compared to sealed containers, wood humidors effectively subtract a few percentage points of RH when considering humidification products.

69% is the RH level to shoot for when storing New World cigars. Meanwhile, your target is 62-65% relative humidity for Old World/Cuban cigars.

Besides the lack of an airtight seal, the wood itself is permeable, which contributes to this effect. However, some wood humidors, such as Elie Bleu's, are so well-made they are effectively airtight. For these, you can use 69% Boveda packs.

You should use one 60g Boveda pack at 72% RH for every 25 cigars your wood humidor can hold. Note that the number of packs depends on your humidor's capacity, not the number of cigars inside.

If you live in a dry or high-altitude area, you may instead need 75% RH packs for your humidor. Many places are drier during the winter, therefore, you may need to raise the RH you use during those months.

There are some exceptions to these general rules, however. For example, some New World cigars prefer lower RH levels, especially some high-end puros such as Arturo Fuente's Opus X. This particular cigar prefers 62-65%.

Also, oily or spongy cigars tend to smoke better when drier. Of course, personal preference also comes into play, as you may prefer certain cigars either drier or more humid than the norm.

Besides smoking the cigars, long-term storage may also necessitate lower RH levels. You might want to store cigars at a lower RH, down to 62 or 65, as a means of improving preservation.

Even though the 72 percent is usually fine, mold can grow due to fluctuations in temperature and the resulting humidity changes. Hence, if you're not smoking a batch of cigars anytime soon, it may be wiser to keep its RH low.

Finally, high relative humidity climates, such as Alabama, where Paul lived for two years, require lower RH packs. In Alabama, the ambient relative humidity would sometimes reach 100 percent.
