Stanley Baldwin was born in Bewdley, Worcestershire in 1867 but at an early age the family moved a few miles away to Wilden, which is now part of the lovely town of Stourport on Severn and this was his residence for the rest of his life. He and his family had a great influence on this inland port town. The family owned the Baldwin Foundries and made items from hand grenades to the famous 'Baldwin Butts' (hinges). Stanley worked in the business until he was 41 years old. When Stanley's father died in 1908 he took over the business and also took over the parliamentary seat that his father had held. He progressed well in parliament eventually becoming Prime Minister on 3 separate occasions. He was Prime Minister when Edward VIII abdicated in 1936. When he retired he lived locally at Astley Hall until his death in 1947.
Historian Pauline Annis, who presents this video, researched the Baldwin family and also wrote a book about Monica Baldwin.
Roy Baylis, a local parishioner comments on his meeting with Stanley Baldwin.
