The capstan / belt friction equation has been utilized in the vertical rescue realm to determine everything from estimated friction within a descent control device, to estimating system impact of edge friction.  In the end, the capstan equation is linear in nature and does not account for real-world nonlinear variables. However, it can be a valuable tool for not only estimating frictional variables but also for appreciating the impact of identifying the exponent / magnitude within your nonlinear vertical system. In this screencast we show how to calculate the traditional capstan / belt friction equation - but more importantly how to create fast deliberate heuristics for operational utilization in the vertical realm.
