What is BPPV?

Benign - means that there is no serious underlying cause like cancer or other worrying illness. The symptoms may be severe and at times very difficult to manage but the underlying cause is not serious or damaging to the body.

Paroxysmal -means the symptoms can come and go and occur suddenly at times.

Positional - means that the symptoms are made worse by certain positions. In the case of BPPV, it is certain positions of the head that seem to trigger symptoms.

Vertigo - is dizziness with a sensation of movement. It is the feeling of the world moving around you or that you are moving when you actually aren't. Some people describe it as being on a ship. Often this will make you feel sick (nauseated) and this may cause you to vomit - although vomiting is slightly rarer.

Brandt Darrof Exercises

The exercises can help stop the dizzy spells experienced by BPPV sufferers. The theory behind why the exercises work suggests that it can help to relocate the loose crystals in the inner ear that cause the dizziness in the first place.

Step 1: Sit at the end of your bed or sofa
Step 2: Turn head to LEFT at a 45-degree angle and lie down on your RIGHT side.
Step 3: Remain in this position for 30 seconds. (You vertigo symptoms are likely to be triggered)
Step 4: Sit up and turn head back to center - you can hold here for 30 seconds to allow your vertigo to settle and keep you safe.
Step 5: Turn your head to the RIGHT side at a 45-degree angle and lie down on the LEFT side.
Step 6: Hold position for 30 seconds (You vertigo symptoms are likely to be triggered).
Step 7: Come back to the center and can hold for 30 seconds before repeating.

That is one cycle complete. In order to be completing the exercises effectively repeat this 5 times.
Remember for the exercises to be most effective you need to do them three times daily for two weeks.
