Mudroom & Bathroom: Episode 3 – Today I am installing large-format porcelain tile in the mudroom and the mudroom bathroom. Since I am installing it over Schluter Ditra underlayment membrane, I am using an unmodified thin-set and applying it with a ½” x ½” square notched trowel. I also used a tile leveling system.

The basic steps I followed were:
• Mix thin-set according to directions on bag
• Use flat side of trowel to press thin-set into membrane
• Use notched side of trowel to trowel on thin-set. All trowel lines in the same direction. If using rectangle tile, the trowel lines should be perpendicular to long side of tile.
• Back butter tile
• Place tile. Press the tile slightly side to side, perpendicular to trowel lines.
• Place spacers around tile.
• Install spacer wedges as you go.
• Keep grout lines clean.
• Wait 24-48 to walk on tile.
