When pushing up, the shoulder joint is extended, as if rotating the shoulder clockwise. This means that the muscles flexing the shoulder joint will work, namely: the pectoralis major and the anterior part of the deltoid muscle. During push-ups, the elbow joint bends, which means that the extensor muscles will work - this is the triceps muscle of the shoulder - that is, the triceps.
