I have a bunch of slabs drying in my backyard and they all have a "top cap" that is pretty unusable lumber because it isn't a consistent thickness and has a live edge on one surface. But I love all the texture and so I brought one of these pieces in my shop and it has been kicking around for a few years, just waiting for inspiration. I recently got a Pantorouter and I feel like that has opened up a door of potential joinery for me. I decided to make two decorative plant stands out of this top cap. I'm not officially calling them stools and they are not ready to take on the weight of an adult human because there is plenty of minor cracking and checking in the wood. When I previously made stools (I have a whole playlist of exactly how I make them) I would use a chunk of plywood with a router to get a circle. And then double side tape it to my wood (which was rough cut to a circle) and use a pattern bit to make it into a circle. This time I kept the plywood on, used it to layout my equally spaced legs and then let it be my backer board for plunging a router bit on the Pantorouter. My solution took lots of changing bigs in the Pantorouter, so I'm sure there are ways to still streamline the process. But I'm happy with the problem solving that went into this. A choose to use thick short legs inspired by milking stools. Artistically I wanted the legs to show off tool marks. The black legs have rough draw knife marks. The grey legs have a someone smoother finish as they were further shaped by a spokeshave. I hope you enjoy watching my process.
